The Easter holiday inspired the Lily Nouveau painting above. Their soft white petals led me to a black gesso underpainting on a birch panel. With oil paints, each color and line became a part of the message of hope that brings new life. The harmony of the music created with the blues and violets gave support to the lily's voice...a pure melody quietly sung.
The Calla Lilies intertwine like lovers. The dance of the tango. The colors of the southern hemisphere bring life to their petals.
Hydrangeas were painted from life in oils. Each summer I'd pick the drying hydrangea blossoms from my garden and cluster them together in a large vase in the sunroom. Part of the fun was watching as they slowly changed colors from the deep violet blues to more grayed green tones. These two paintings can be hung separately or as a dyptych.
Lotus Rising was inspired by the lotus blossoms in the Japanese Gardens in downtown Portland, Oregon. Rising out of the large masses of leaves, the blossoms appeared on tiny stalks with their petals spreading to the sun. I was struck by how the sunlight filtered thru their petals to create lush yellow pink hues. This abstract captures that quality of the lotus in oils.
Flowers are one of my favorite subjects for the winter months when the studio is more inviting than freezing temperatures outside. My goal is to interpret their language into an abstract painting with line and texture.
